The Crow and the Pitcher

Full of energy again, the Crow looked around. There, right at his feet, were dozens of small pebbles. The ground was covered with them.He picked one up with his beakand dropped it into the Pitcher.Plop! It sank to the bottom. He picked up another.Plop! And another.Plop, plop, plop!

The Crow worked tirelessly. One pebble after another,he dropped into the Pitcher. The sun beat down on his back.Sweat dripped from his feathers. His beak was sore from carrying so many stones. But he did not stop.Every few pebbles,he would peer into the Pitcher to check the water level. At first, the water barely moved."Patience," he told himself."Keep going.Patience."

After ten pebbles, the water had risen just a little. After twenty pebbles,it was noticeably higher. After thirty pebbles, the water was halfway up the Pitcher. The Crow's heart leaped with joy."It's working! It's actually working!" he cried.

He worked even faster now.Forty pebbles.Fifty pebbles.Sixty pebbles. Each plop brought the precious water closerand closer to the rim.The Crow could see his reflection in the water now.He was tired,so very tired. His wings ached. His beak was numb. But he did not give up."Just a few more," he panted."Just a few more."

At last, after what felt like a hundred pebbles, the water had risen high enough. The Crow looked downand saw the water sparkling just below the rim of the Pitcher. His throat was burning, but his heart was singing. He bent his head, dipped his beak into the cool, clear water, and drank.Oh,how delicious it was!Sweetand cooland wonderful! Each drop was like life itself flowing into his tired body.He drankand drank until he could drink no more.

"Ahhh," sighed the Crow, sitting back on his heels. His thirst was gone. His strength was returning. His head no longer throbbed."That was the best drink of water I have ever had in my entire life."

Just then,a little Sparrow flew downand landed beside him."I saw what you did," said the Sparrow, her eyes wide with admiration."You dropped all those stones into the Pitcher, one by one.You never gave up,even though it took so long.I would have given up after five stones. How did you keep going?"

The Crow smiled."When I was a little chick," he said,"my grandmother taught me something. She said,'Little by little does the trick.' I did not understand what she meant at the time. But today,I finally do.One stone cannot raise the water.Ten stones cannot raise the water. But a hundred stones, one after another, can move a mountain. You just have to keep going."

The Sparrow nodded thoughtfully."I will rememberthat," she said."Little by little does the trick."

The Crow took one last drink from the Pitcher, then spread his wings. He was still tired, but he felt stronger than he had felt in days."Goodbye, little Sparrow," he said."May you always find waterwhen you are thirsty."

And with that,he flew off into the bright blue sky,a wiserand happier bird than the onewho had set outthat morning.

Moral:Where there is a will, there is a way.Patienceand clever thinking can solve even the hardest problems.
